Honduras for the Holidays

Not only is coffee Honduras’s number one export, but they’re the largest Central American coffee exporter, and the seventh largest in the world. Still, you rarely hear about Honduran coffee as they have a reputation for being a place to buy cheap coffee to blend. This makes it difficult for farmers to market their coffee or even get capital from season to season. Capital is crucial given the delay between growing, milling and selling coffee. Honduran farmers that break out of the commodity market typically do it by growing exotic varieties or through unique processing methods. Their national coffee organization has poured effort into their higher quality markets. We are always thrilled to pay good money for these coffees. They’re as delicious as they are interesting.

Coffee berries at Finca la Cueva during the natural fermentation process.

Roger Antonio Domínguez Márquez is a superstar in the coffee world. He placed second in the 2019 Cup of Excellence competition with a naturally processed lot of catuai (that’s the variety). His farm, Finca la Cueva, in Márcala, La Paz consistently produces incredible microlots and we were eyeing the one you’re about to drink for almost a year. Like his award winning coffee, this microlot is a naturally processed catuai. The lot was so small that when we’re sold out, there’s no more left to be had anywhere in the world. Our importing partner felt this coffee was “sweet and savory with tart, winey fruit acidity; berry, dark chocolate, and molasses flavors.” We agree but came at it from a different direction. The mouthfeel reminds us of hot chocolate at the start and powdered chocolate at the end. The flavor was remarkably similar to a chocolate and raspberry truffle.
