Coffee was never one of Bolivia’s main exports but from 2011 to 2016, production dropped a whopping 71%. If nothing changed, lack of infrastructure, environmental threats, and the lure of coca profits would eliminate the industry. Instead, for the first time ever, the federal government provided services and financial assistance to the coffee industry and now, a new generation of young farmers have emerged.

Yulissa Chambi grew up helping her mother pick coffee on their family’s farm in the Los Yungas region. She discovered a new side of the industry when her brother, Felix (who helped export Yulissa’s coffee), started specialty farming. She began taking classes and with her family’s help was able to plant her own trees on ten acres of land. In the recent past, young adults wanted nothing to do with farming but for Yulissa, it’s become a passion. This month, we’re letting you try her first harvest, an incredible lot grown from the Catuai variety.
Yulissa’s coffee is an anaerobic washed coffee, meaning the fruit was removed from the seed by starting fermentation in an environment that was already free of oxygen. It’s an incredibly clean coffee that feels equally enlivening and soothing to drink. There’s a lot of floral fragrance with nutty undertones. We picked out notes of peanut brittle, Ferrero Rocher, and plum blossom.
This coffee never made it onto our website because it was all pre-sold. We anticipate that will be happening a lot in the next few months.
